This Austrian coin, the Maria Theresien Taler (MTT), was first minted in 1741, and from that time forward was widely adopted as silver bullion in world trade. It has a purity of 0.833, as against English sterling silver which has a purity of 0.925. Maria Theresa (Maria Theresia), for whom the coin is named, was Empress of Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780, and the silver thaler / taler coin is always dated 1780. This photo shows the reverse / back of the coin, the two-headed eagle of Austria. The letters S.F. show that this example was struck after 1850. Thaler is the root word from which 'dollar' originated.
