Banjul, St. Mary's Island, The Gambia: triumphal arch at the entrance to the capital - Never Again Memorial Arch / Arch 22, the gate to Banjul, 35 m high structure between the Banjul-Serrekunda Highway and Independence Drive, the city's most famous landmark. Located on the the former European Cemetery, this kitschy triumphal arch was originally built in 1996 to mark the military coup d'état of July 22, 1994, which led Yahya Jammeh to power, in 2022, the arch was renamed the 'Never Again Memorial Arch' to commemorate the victims of the infamous president. Designed by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby.
