Olivença / Olivenza, Évora district / Badajoz province, Portugal / Spain, EU: Santa Maria Magdalena is a remarkable church located in Olivenza, renowned for its unique Manueline (Portuguese late Gothic) architectural style, reflecting the town's historical ties to Portugal. Built in the early 16th century by king Manuel I, the church is notable for its richly detailed stonework, especially around its main portal and windows, featuring intricate floral and maritime motifs typical of Manueline design - partly inspired by the Convent of Jesus in Setúbal and the Old Cathedral of Elvas. Inside, it boasts a spacious nave with elegant ribbed vaulting and a striking Baroque altar. Olivença is a historically contested town located east of the Guadiana river. It has been the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute between Spain and Portugal since the early 19th century.

Antigua Guatemala March 01 2020\n\nAntigua Guatemala Cathedral is a Latin Catholic church in Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala. The original church was built around 1541, but suffered several earthquakes throughout its history, and the first church building was demolished in 1669. The cathedral was rebuilt and consecrated in 1680.\nWith its Baroque architecture and thriving textile scene, this former colonial capital is among Central America’s most beguiling destinations.\nAntigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200-year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced church. It’s an integral part of the city’s famous Semana Santa, a holy week with parades and rituals.\nNestled in the forested hills of southern Guatemala, the small city of Antigua was once the most prominent seat of Spanish colonial government between Mexico City and Lima, Peru. Founded in the early 16th century, it served as Guatemala’s capital for almost 300 years, until 1773, when it was abandoned by crown officials following a series of devastating volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and floods. In the mid-1800s, agriculturists took note of Antigua’s rich volcanic soils, and the city thrived once again, as a center of coffee and grain production. It was during this period that its canary-colored Santa Catalina Arch, built in 1694 as a walkway for nuns, received its domed clock tower, becoming Antigua’s most iconic monument. In 1979, Unesco designated Antigua a World Heritage Site, ensuring the protection of its architectural and cultural legacy.
