Rome, Italy - May 12, 2018: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located in the Castro Pretorio district, near Termini Station and was built between 1879 and 1887 at the behest of Pope Pius IX who, in 1870, laid the foundation stone of the new building. However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. The magnificent and ancient mosaics of the apse inside the Basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano (Basilica of the Saints Cosmas and Damian), in the heart of Ancient Rome. Made in the 6th century, the central mosaic represents the elevation of the two saints into the sky with the figure of Christ in the center. This church was built in the 4th century in early Christian style in the Roman Forum on the remains of the Temple of Peace, dedicated to Valerius Romulus, deified son of the emperor Maxentius. In 527 the complex was Christianized and dedicated to the two brothers Cosmas and Damian, doctors of Arab origins who were martyred in Syria during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian. In 1512 the church was granted to the monks of the Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi with the construction of the monastery. The Roman Forums, one of the largest archaeological areas in the world, represented the political, legal, religious and economic center of the city of Rome, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
