$Viola hederacea, the Australian violet, is native to Australia. This small herbaceous perennial is common and widespread in Victoria and Tasmania, along the Great Dividing Range.\n\nThe Viola hederacea is infrequently grown in gardens. It is a less spectacular plant than the cultivated species Viola banksii, with a more open, less robust habit and less striking flowers.$

Viola odorata is a species of the genus Viola native to Europe and Asia, but has also been introduced to North America and Australasia. It is commonly known as Sweet Violet, English Violet, Common Violet, or Garden Violet. The herb is known as Banafsa, Banafsha or Banaksa in India, where it is commonly used as remedy to cure sore throat and tonsilitis. The sweet, unmistakable scent of this flower has proved popular throughout the generations, particularly in the late Victorian period, and has consequently been used in the production of many cosmetic fragrances and perfumes. The French are also known for their violet syrup, most commonly made from an extract of violets. In the United States, this French violet syrup is used to make violet scones and marshmallows.

$Medium to tall, rather robust, foetid perennial with leafy overwintering stems. Leaves palate, deep green, lobes simple, toothed. Flowers nodding, yellowish-green with a purple rim, bell-shaped10-30mm, in large clusters. Fruit a cluster of 3 follicles.\nHabitat: Woodland, often with beech and yew, scrub and rocky places, generally on rather dry, shallow calcareous soils. Flowering season: January-May.\nDistribution: Western Europe (I know the species wild in Eastern Belgium). Widely cultivated in Gardens.\nAll parts of the plant are poisonous.\n\nThis Picture is made during a Trip in the Southern Part of Belgium in June 2006.$
