Greenland: melt ponds pattern in the ice sheet, aerial view - melt ponds are pools of water that form on the ice in the warmer months of spring and summer. Being generally darker than the surrounding ice and therefore having a lower albedo, melt ponds absorb solar radiation instead of reflecting it and therefore affect the Earth's radiation balance. Research shows that snowfall can no longer replenish the melted ice that flows into the ocean from Greenland’s glaciers. Since 2000 Greenland's melting ice added a millimetre a year to rising sea levels. A climate change causing the total loss of the ice sheet would raise sea levels by over seven metres, re-shaping the world's map.
