The Verde Valley (Spanish: Valle Verde or Green Valley) is a lush valley in central Arizona and one of a few riparian habitats in the state. The Verde River runs through the valley and is joined by Oak Creek, Beaver Creek and West Clear Creek. The Verde River is one of the state’s remaining free-flowing river systems and provides critical habitat for fish and wildlife. The valley is bounded by the Mogollon Rim to the north and Mingus Mountain to the south. The Verde Valley includes about 714 square miles in the center of Arizona and is about 100 miles north of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The valley is also noted for its many red rock formations. The Valley of Fire is a 46,000-acre State Park, famous for its unique rock formations, red sandstone cliffs, and petroglyphs. Rainbow Vista is a viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, with vibrant colors ranging from reds and oranges to yellows and pinks. The unique sandstone formations have been eroded by wind and water over millions of years, creating a variety of interesting shapes and textures. On May 20, 2012 there was an annular solar eclipse that was visible from the Valley of Fire. The sun formed a ring around the moon; a spectacular phenomenon to view. As the sun passed behind the moon, the land around the area acquired an other-worldly glow, providing the opportunity to capture some brightly colored and radiant scenes. Valley of Fire State Park is a public state park and nature preservation area covering about 19,000 ha located 26 km south of Overton, Nevada. It is a popular Las Vegas day trip. Amazing red sandstone formations, beautiful natural arches, ancient petroglyphs an hour drive outside of Vegas. The state park derives its name from red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. It is Nevada's oldest state park, as commemorated with Nevada Historical Marker 150. It became a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
