The construction of the  Arc de Triomphe in  Paris was ordered in 1806 by Napoleon, the French Emperor.  Napoleon wanted to honor the Grande Armee, which had conquered most of Europe and was considered invicible.  After his Austerlitz victory in 1805, Napoleon said to his soldiers :  \

Palmyra, Syria- 28 November 2008: Ruins of Palmyra city, Syrian deesert. Dating back to the Neolithic era, the city of Palmyra, was a strategically located oasis first attested in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travelers crossing the Syrian Desert. Mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the annals of the Assyrian kings, Palmyra was subsequently incorporated into the Seleucid Empire, followed by the Roman Empire which brought it great prosperity. It is saddening that its present Roman ruins, declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, have come to be endangered in the 21st century by regional military and political strife.

The triumphal arch (Italian: Arco di Settimio Severo), dedicated in AD 203 to commemorate the Parthian victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons, Caracalla and Publius Septimius Geta, is located at the Northeast end of the Roman Forum. The tourists will walk up through the Arch to Campidoglio and the Renaissance buildings in the background. In the far background is the white marble structure of Piazza Venezia.
