A male Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hymenalis) in San Bernardino County of southern California. This species has a very complex taxonomy and was once consigned to six separate species depending on color and location, but the forms interbreed extensively.  There are considered to be the Slate-colored, White-winged, Oregon, Pink-sided, Gray-headed, Red-backed, and Guadalupe Groups. The various groups are permanent residents across southern Canada and most of the United States.  They breed as far north as Alaska and northern Canada and winter to northern Mexico.

This alert doe mule deer is watching for any preditor since she is in an open field. The mule deer is indigenous to western North America. It is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule. This one was spotted in Bosque de Apache Reserve in New Mexico.
