Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument, located in southeastern Utah close to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, has sandstone rock faces covered with petroglyphs drawn over 2,000 years ago by Anasazi, Pueblo and Archaic Native Americans. The drawings consist of peoples, animals and symbols and were created in the desert varnish that builds up on the walls of the sandstone when iron and manganese from rainfall and bacteria are deposited.
This mountain lion prowls above Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Pier and the Pacific Ocean. Mountain lions are also known as cougars and pumas. There are only two megacities with urban big cats - Mumbai and Los Angeles. The cougar in this picture lives in the Santa Monica Mountains and is surrounded by deadly freeways along with other wildlife such as foxes, bobcats, deer and increasingly, people. The world’s largest wildlife crossing (The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing) is helping these animals survive by giving them interconnectivity to improve their genetic diversity.

Indigenous people have been carving in rock for thousands of years as a means of written communication. Petroglyphs are either images, designs or symbols chiseled, carved or scratched on the surface of the rock. Many of these carvings have endured over the centuries and are still visible today. The image on the right side of this rock depicts a round face. Modern natives in this area identify this as a Kachina, or spirit being. Research suggests that the Kachina Culture came to this area around 1300AD. Similar Kachina symbols are used in modern Puebloan pottery and weavings which helps make the connection from past to present. We don’t always know the true meaning of these carvings or how to interpret them. And maybe it’s not our place to try. We can however enjoy them for their artistry. These petroglyphs were photographed at Puerco Pueblo in Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona, USA.

Wadi Rum is a desert valley cut into the sandstone and granite cliffs in southern Jordan. Known also as the Valley of the Moon it has been inhabited since prehistoric times (witnessed by the petroglyph inscriptions) and by semi nomadic tribes since the Nabataeans but is best known for its association with T E Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia - who based himself here to encourage the Arab Revolt and to attack Turkish Forces of the Ottoman Empire during WW1. He was later immortalized by the film of the same name, made in 1962 by David Lean. Today the only inhabitants are Bedouin tribes and transient tourists.
