The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

The Gran Sasso d'Italia (or simply Gran Sasso) is the highest mountain massif of the Apennines, located entirely in Abruzzo, in the easternmost ridge of the Abruzzo Apennines, on the border between the provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara. Composed of several and adjacent mountain groups and between the Monti della Laga to the north-west (separated from them by the upper Vomano Valley and the Gran Sasso d'Italia state road 80 that crosses it), Teramo to the north- east, the plain of Assergi and the Conca Aquilana to the south-west, the Piana di Navelli and the Valle del Tirino to the south, the Gole di Popoli to the south-east, is an environmental area protected by the establishment of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga and on it fell the mountain community Gran Sasso and the mountain community Campo Imperatore-Piana di Navelli.
