They enjoy protected status at Nara Park. 1200 of them roam the area looking for deer-crackers (Shika-senbei) from visitors. Vendors sell them in the park, which is also the site of the three shrines: Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, and Kasuga Shrine.
