Kigalia, Rwanda: colorful bird of paradise flower / crane flower (Strelitzia reginae) stands out against a green foliage background. The bird of paradise flower is a herbaceous, evergreen, acaulescent (stemless) plant, growing from a rhizome (underground stem) with fleshy, finger-like roots. It forms clump-like stands with its branched rhizomes. The inflorescence is partially covered by a beak-shaped, bract (the so-called spathe), which usually has red edges.
