The Magaliesberg Mountains is a small mountain chain in the Gauteng and North-west provinces of South Africa. The mountains consist predominantly of layers of shale, quartzite and dolomite of the Transvaal Supergroup which was uplifted and tilted about 2000 million years ago.

Stromatolites are layered accretionary limestone structures. They formed by the trapping, binding and cementation of sediments by cyanobacteria, usually forming a dome. These stromatolites form part of the Gamohaan formation in the Ghaap group, which were deposited at the end of the Archean Eon
