Human spleen amyloidosis. Amyloidosis is caused by abnormal folding of normal soluble proteins leading to fibril formation. These clumps of protein are called amyloid deposits. The spleen is involved in most cases of systemic amyloidosis. The micrograph shows a lardaceous spleen form in which amyloid is deposited in the walls of the splenic sinusoids.
Cardiac amyloidosis is a condition where faulty proteins build up in your heart. You can inherit this condition, or it can develop on its own (usually later in life). As faulty proteins accumulate, your heart struggles to pump, ultimately leading to heart failure and death.
