A suggestive view of the interior of the medieval church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist) in the old town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as the 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones). This church, in Apulian-Romanesque style, is one of the most beautiful churches in Matera, whose construction dates back to the early 13th century, built on the remains of a small temple. At the end of the 17th century it was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, undergoing a profound transformation of the original structure. The interior of the church has strong influences of typical medieval architecture, but also Gothic and Arab architectural influences. The plan is a Latin cross with three naves, separated by eight colonnaded pillars decorated with zoomorphic figures. On the left a chapel with a 16th century fresco depicting the Madonna della Nova. The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Wide angle image in high definition format.
