A salt evaporation pond is a shallow artificial salt pan designed to extract salts from sea water or other brines. Natural salt pans are geological formations that are also created by water evaporating and leaving behind salts. Salt evaporation ponds may also be called salterns, salt works or salt pans.

The Ston salt pans, the oldest in Europe and dates back to the Roman times, 2000 years B.C. Now is the oldest active salt pans in the world. Solana Ston consists of 58 pools divided into 5 groups.

The saltfields close to Aveiro in Portugal has two bigger, quite different saltfields to offer. One is quite colorful with plenty of structures, while the other one is more simplistic and kept in grey/white salt tones. From above with the drone it is incredible to see these colors, structures as well as the whole area close to the city.
