An idyllic cityscape of the old town of Matera, known worldwide as the 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones Hills). In the image the Sasso Caveoso hill, seen from a belvedere. The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in high definition format.
