Vintage air travel with Pan Am airlines during the 1950's. Pan American World Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial flag carrier of the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. It was founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba.
A beautifully restored L-4 Grasshopper flies by at Massey Aerodrome, a small grass field on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper is a light observation and liaison aircraft that served with distinction during World War II. Developed by Piper Aircraft Corporation, the L-4 Grasshopper was a militarized version of the Piper J-3 Cub, a popular civilian aircraft of the era.\n\nThe primary role of the L-4 Grasshopper was observation, reconnaissance, and liaison duties. It was used for artillery spotting, aerial photography, courier missions, and communication tasks, providing vital support to ground troops.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper saw extensive service during World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces, the U.S. Navy (as the NE-1), and other Allied air forces. It played a vital role in numerous campaigns, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific island-hopping campaign.
