Two Guns is an early 1900’s ghost town in Northern Arizona. It’s not a commercialized tourist site and doesn’t get as many visitors as other ghost towns. People come to wander through the abandoned structures, look and wonder what went on here back in the day. Legends have been written about the town, none of which are likely to be true. One involves a standoff and massacre between the Navajos and Apaches. Another tells about the search for the famous outlaw Billy the Kid. It is mostly a place of rustic stone buildings, all of which are crumbling. Two Guns, on the edge of Canyon Diablo, was supposedly named after one of the early settlers, a crotchety old guy who called himself Two Gun Miller. The community of Two Guns developed after the Santa Fe Highway was established and a bridge was built over Canyon Diablo in 1915. In 1926 the highway became part of U.S. Route 66, turning Two Guns into a tourist destination. In its day, Two Guns had a gas station, restaurant, campground, swimming pool, lodging and even a zoo. Over the years, buildings burned, businesses closed and finally the fate of the small community was sealed by the construction of Interstate Highway 40 which bypassed Two Guns to the north. Eventually Two Guns became a ghost town. In 1988 the Canyon Diablo Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Two Guns is located west of Winslow, Arizona, USA.
