The Peace Monument, completed in 1878, stands 44 feet high in the northwestern quadrant of the circle to the west of the U.S. Capitol Building. It is dedicated to naval deaths during the Civil War.\n\nAt the top of the monument, a classically draped female figure representing Grief cries against the shoulder of History. History has inscribed on the tablet she holds, “They died that their country might live.” \n\nAnother classically-dressed female figure, Victory, stands below the other two, holding aloft a laurel wreath. At her feet are two small children, representing Mars and Neptune, the gods of war and the sea, respectively. \n\nThe monument is the work of sculptor Franklin Simmons (1839-1913).\n\nIn the background is the west face of the Capitol Building.
