The Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian Church in the world. It is believed that St. Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and by tradition the first Bishop of Rome, is buried in the site. A stunning sunset light envelops the National Monument of the Altare della Patria, in the historic heart of Rome. The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II (bronze equestrian statue in the center) near the Roman Forum, between the north side of the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) and the central Piazza Venezia. Inside is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all the official Italian civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25.
