Autumn view of the Great Serpent Mound, the largest serpent effigy in the world, extending about 1,370 feet (420 m). Originally though to have been constructed by prehistoric the Adena culture, scholars now think it was built by the Fort Ancient culture (1000-1650 CE), an Ohio Valley-based, mound-building society. The Fort Ancient culture was influenced by the contemporary Mississippian culture society based along the mid-Mississippi River valley and extending as far north as the Great Lakes area.
