A male ribbon eel in Lembeh Strait in Indonesia
Ribbon Moray or Ribbon Eel Rhinomuraena quaesita occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia and French Polynesia, including Marianas and Marshalls in a depth range from 1 to 67m. max. length 130cm.\n\nAdults occur in lagoon and seaward reefs. The secretive species is normally hidden in sand or rubble, sometimes with only its head protruding, like this specimen. Rhinomuraena quaesita feeds on small fishes. \n\nJuveniles all black, males have yellow dorsal fin and females change to a nearly all yellow color, but usually with blue in the posterior. \n\nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'38.166 N 125°13'34.284 E at 20m depth

Honshu Pipefish Doryrhamphus japonicus occurs in the Western Pacific from Japan and the Korean Republic to Indonesia in temperate and tropical waters in a depth range from 1 to 30m, max. length 8.5cm. \nThe species inhabits small caves in sublittoral rocky reefs. It is also reported from tide pools to depths of at least 25 m offshore, but is mostly seen in shallow depths. \nHonshu Pipefish is an active cleaner that shares crevices with shrimps, large mud crabs and sometimes moray eels. The ovoviviparous species occurs solitary or in pairs near sponges and Diadema sea urchins . The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°29'33.4144 N 125°15'40.4468 E at 22m depth

Yellow and Blueback Fusilier Caesio teres occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to the Line Islands (but not in the Red Sea or the Arabian Gulf) in a depth range from 5-60m, max. length 40cm, common 27cm. \nAdults are found primarily around coral reefs, with a preference for coralline lagoons. They feed on zooplankton in large midwater groups and form schools with other caesionids. \nThis specimen gets cleaned by a juvenile Cleaner Wrasse Labroides dimidiatus. \nBluestreak Cleaner Wrasses Labroides dimidiatus usually occur in pairs in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 1-40m, usually 1-30m, max. length 14cm. The species creates 'cleaning' stations to which fishes come to have crustacean ectoparasites and mucus removed. Cleaning intensity is not related to client size or commonness. Even hands of divers will be cleaned if presented to the cleaning station! \nTriton Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°56'19.752 S 134°7'15.198 E at 14m depth

This striking photo features a blue ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), its vivid electric-blue body and bright yellow dorsal fin creating a stunning contrast against the surrounding coral reef. The eel, with its distinctively wide-open mouth, displays a typical behavior used for respiration and to detect prey. Emerging from its burrow, this juvenile to adult male stage eel is a captivating example of the reef’s dynamic biodiversity. The intricate details of the surrounding marine environment further highlight the eel’s unique beauty and adaptability.
White Ribbon Eel Pseudechidna brummeri occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the western Indian Ocean to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands in a depth range from 1 to 8m, max. length 103cm. \nThe solitary species inhabits reef flats and shallow lagoons, usually buried in the sand or rubble. Occasionally (like in this case) seen swimming between its burrows in shallow protected areas. Pseudechidna brummeri is a nocturnal predator known for its ambush hunting of small fish and crustaceans. \nAn unexpected discovery in the North-East Atlantic, in Portugal, occurred 2023. \nThe species may have been introduced through ship ballast water, a common pathway for the unintentional transport of aquatic organisms. Given the proximity of a large port, this possibility gains significance. \nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia.\n1°27'21.828 N 125°13'37.884 E at 2m depth
