A young desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) searching for food south of Tucson, AZ. This tortoise has a range from eastern California, southern Nevada, western Arizona, through northwest Mexico.  Because of population decline as much as 90% in some areas since 1980, the tortoise is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and various recovery programs are in place or being developed in areas of the United States.  If this animal manages to avoid predation and habitat loss, it can live up to 80 years.
