Anthopleura xanthogrammica, or the giant green anemone, is a species of intertidal sea anemone of the family Actiniidae. Other names for this anemone include green surf anemone, giant green sea anemone, green anemone, giant tidepool anemone, anemone, and rough anemone. Salt Point State Park, California.
Anemones are large coral polyps that, unlike most other corals, have a soft body. Sea anemones received their second name for their extraordinary beauty and external similarity to flowers.

Magnificent sea Anemone (Heteractis magnifica) aka Ritteri anemone colonise this healthy underwater coral reef. When open these flared out Cnidarian discs reveal vast amounts of stinging tentacles used to stun and consume it’s prey. The tentacles also fascilitate photosynthesis of its symbiotic zooxanthellae, a second means of eating. The Anemone maintain a symbiotic relationship with the Anemone Clown fish (Amphiprion ephippium) as seen here. False Clown Anemonefishes Amphiprion ocellaris are hiding in the tentacles of a Sea Anemone Heteractis magnifica. \nAmphiprion ocellaris inhabits shallow and calm tropical lagoons of the Indo-Malaysian region, from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, throughout South-east Asia and south to Australia in a depth range from 1-15m, usually 3-15m, max. length 11cm. It is one of the most popular marine aquarium fishes. \nHeteractis magnifica occurs in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, from the Red Sea to Samoa, in South East Asia, Northern Australia and the Western Pacific Regions, from Australia to the Ryukyu Islands in a depth range from 1-50m depth preferring the temperature range from 24-32 °C. Heteractis magnifica is the 2nd largest of all sea anemones. The oral disc reaches 100cm, but typical is 30-50cm. In captivity, the longest lifespan is 80 years, in the wild it is unknown, but its estimated that some individuals are hundreds of years old! Coral reefs are the one of earths most complex ecosystems, containing over 800 species of corals and one million animal and plant species. Here we see a shallow coral reef consisting of a Magnificent Anemone (Heteractis magnifica) containing a Skunk Anemonefish (Amphiprion ephippium) Clownfish. A perfect demonstration of a symbiotic relationship. The coral and fish have a symbiotic relationship. The fish cleans parasite off the Anemone and in return uses its stinging polyps as protection from predators. This is a typical display of animal behaviour that helps ensure the safety and survival of both species.

An interesting reef: At five metres, large patches of branching Acropora and a three metre Turbinaria peltata colony were encountered. Hard coral cover averaged 60%, soft corals 22%, turf algae and sponges less than 1%, crustose coralline algae 18%. Table Acropora colonies exceed three metres in size.\nThe coral lesion repair was moderate, and both overgrowth of damaged portions of coral colonies and reorientation in growth plane of toppled corals were high.\n\nA large Table Acropora Coral dominates the scenery with some Isopora Corals around. \n\nMany fish species are in the background. \n\nBui Island, Indonesia\n5°5'13.77 S 131°55'36.654 E at 8m depth
Unusual Sea Anemone appears to be back lit, however this iridescent quality is natural to this particular sea creature. Learning ideas, oceanography, scuba diving.

Urticina piscivora or Tealia piscivora, common names fish-eating anemone and fish-eating urticina is a northeast Pacific species of sea anemone in the family Actiniidae. Monterey Bay, California.
