Equestrian Monument of Cosimo I, Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Tuscany, Italy. This bronze equestrian statue was designed by sculptor Giambologna and erected in 1594. Cosimo I de' Medici was the Duke of Florence and the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. Florence is the capital city of the region of Tuscany. It was established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC and was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time. This Basilica, built on the Celian hill from the 4th century in the early Christian era, is also known as the Cathedral of Rome and is the most important and ancient basilica in the Western world. Inside the apse a series of magnificent Byzantine mosaics depicting the emperor Constantine, while the central nave was designed in the Baroque period by Francesco Borromini.
