THE ARGENTINE GLACIERS HAVE THESE MORAINES THAT ARE THE ICE DETACHMENTS OF CENTURIES OLD AND THAT FORM RIVERS OF ICE THAT GO DOWN TO THE SEA

Hiker, standing on a rock, spreads his arms showing the joy of being at the nascent of the creek that flows from Hoyada or Grande Lagoon (Laguna Grande) located in the highest mountain range of Tachira State, Venezuela. This periglacial lagoon is at 3,400 masl and has 400 meteres in diameter. To see this magnificent gift of nature you have to drive about 20 minutes from La Grita up to the highest paved road of Tachira State in Osorio; then, take two more hours of driving with off road vehicle through the mountains; and finally, there is a two hours hike under severe conditions like small narrow steep rocky gorges, low oxygen level due to the altitue, cold foggy weather and high hills. The scene is magnificent, worth every effort in getting there.

Glaciers are sensitive indicators of global warming. The photograph shows the Moreno Glacier where it enters Lago Argentino, Patagonia. The water in the lake is around 14ºC in summer, melting the ice face from beneath, leaving huge masses of ice hanging. As the photograph shows, when the overhang weight is larger than the shear force strength of the ice wall, gigantic ice block crash into Lago Argentino, eroding the glacial front wall. Moreno Glacier if one of the few glaciers in the world where the erosion at the front is still slower than the replenishment from behind. Global warming is steadily warming the surface waters of Lago Argentino leading to a more rapid erosion at the glacial front. In this sense the Moreno Glacier is a benchmark for global warming since once the Moreno Glacier starts to retreat, global warming impact will be global.

The San Francisco Peaks are the remnants of an ancient volcano that erupted millions of years ago, shattering a large mountain and leaving a large crater and surrounding peaks. The tallest of these is Humphreys at 12,637 feet and Agassiz at 12,356 feet. The Briksdalsbreen glacier or Briksdal glacier, is one of the most accessible and best known arms of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Briksdalsbreen is located in the municipality of Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The glacier lies on the north side of the Jostedalsbreen, in Briksdalen (the Briks valley) which is located at the end of the Oldedalen valley, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of the village of Olden. It is located inside Jostedalsbreen National Park. Briksdalsbreen terminates in a small glacial lake, Briksdalsbrevatnet, which lies 346 metres (1,135 ft) above sea level.
