The main entrance to Colchester Castle in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England. Colchester Castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius and dates from 1076. It was constructed using Roman bricks and stone which were already locally available in large quantities. Colchester itself is known as Great Britain’s oldest recorded town and the Castle has been used variously as a military structure, a gaol and is now a museum dating back to 1860. The tower of the Town Hall can be seen in the background.
