This Hindu goddess with four arms is Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and fortune. As here, she is usually shown sitting in a lotus flower (water lily) and also holding them in her hands. Thus, the lotus flower is a symbol of purity and enlightenment amid ignorance. This playing card has square corners, typical of the mid- to late-19th century. Ravi Varma Press began in 1892 but was aready deep in debt by 1899. The press was sold and the factory went up in flames in 1972.

This is Trump II, a picture card from a pack of large Tarot cards (called Taroch or Tarok in German). Cards in this pack measure 74 x 129mm. The maker is Fred. Piatnik & Sohne. Trump II shows a crowned eagle with a sword and sceptre clasped in one claw, perched on a rock bearing the legend 'Industrie und GlĀ³ck' (Industry and Good Firtune). Vertical reverse shows a walking traveller carring a sack over his shoulder. The history of Tarot goes back to 15th century Italy. There were 78 cards, including 21 'trump' cards and a 'fool' or 'skeench' dressed as a harlequin, which in modern packs would be called a joker. The large numbers of cards and the complicated rules led to a decline in the popularity of these Tarot card games. Austrian Taroch cards use French symbols (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades), and a simplified pack numbering 54, which still includes the 21 trumps plus the fool. These make up the 22 'Taroch' cards. This particular pack was made by Piatnik (Vienna) in 1900.
