The Bentonite Hills, about 14 km (9 mi) north of Utah Hwy 24 on Hartnet Road, east of Capitol Reef National Park, is an area of badlands composed mainly of the mineral bentonite. This is a type of clay composed primarily of montmorillonite, an aluminum phyllosilicate material. It forms from the weathering of ancient volcanic ash when exposed to seawater. At first it is white or pale blue, but eventually can turn cream colored, then red, yellow, and brown. Virtually all of these colors are visible in stratified layers of the Bentonite hills, as are scattered black lava boulders, evidence of ancient volcanic action.
