Black Widow Spider
The raft spider, scientific name Dolomedes plantarius, is a large semi-aquatic spider of the family Pisauridae found throughout north-western and central Europe. It is one of only two species of the genus Dolomedes found in Europe, the other being the slightly smaller Dolomedes fimbriatus.\nHabitat:\nThe great raft spider, as with most other Dolomedes species, is a semi-aquatic spider. It inhabits lowland fen and grazing marsh areas and is dependent on the presence of standing or slow moving neutral to alkaline water. Within these areas it can be found on the margins of pools or ditches. Emergent vegetation is highly important for use as perches for hunting and basking and to support nursery webs. As a warmth loving species they avoid areas where water surfaces are shaded. \nIf successful copulation takes place, the female will carry her fertilised egg sac around with her, before placing the egg sac inside a silken nursery tent that she has made. The female will then guard the nursery until the spiderlings are ready to disperse into the surrounding habitat. \nIn the Netherlands the Species occurs in the Lower Marshes of West Netherlands, in the Northern Part of Overijssel and Peat Meadows in Friesland. They are mostly seen in dense fields of Water Soldier.\nDistribution:\nPopulations of the great raft spider are found throughout Europe and Russia, in Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia (country), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (source Wikipedia).\n\nThis Picture is made in the Weerribben (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in August 2022.
