The Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre (in Latin Colosseum, in Italian Colosseo)is an amphitheatre from the time of the Roman Empire, built in the first century. It is located in the east of the Roman Forum, and was the largest of those built in the Roman Empire. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium), it is now called the Colosseum (Colosseum) because next to it was a large statue, the Colossus of Nero, a monument dedicated to Emperor Nero that later underwent transformations and disappeared.
