The Whetstone Mountains located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, are a part of the Coronado National Forest. The mountains are steep and rugged, with Apache Peak being its highest point. The foothills are covered in dense scrub, grasses, cacti, succulents, while low woody trees can be found at the higher elevations. San Cristobal Mountains
The San Francisco Peaks are the remnants of an ancient volcano that erupted millions of years ago, shattering a large mountain and leaving a large crater and surrounding peaks. The tallest of these is Humphreys at 12,637 feet and Agassiz at 12,356 feet. The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

In the U.S. state of California, U.S. Route 395 (US 395) is a 557-mile (896 km) route which traverses from Interstate 15 near the southern city limits of Hesperia, north to the Oregon state line in Modoc County near Goose Lake. The route clips into Nevada, serving the cities Carson City and Reno, before returning to California.
