A winter-plumaged American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) on a pond at a private fishing lake in Riverside County, Southern California.  The White pelican has the second longest wingspan of any bird in North America after the California Condor, and can weigh up to 13.6 kg (30 lbs).  In breeding plumage, they acquire a horny plate on the upper bill and spiky white feathers on their crown.  They winter in the southern half of the United States through Mexico and Central America and breed from northern California to northern Canada.
