Its wood is very rot resistant under water, and may underpin the houses and bridges of Venice. In the UK, it is commonly planted on roadsides (as here), because it grows quickly and is dust-resistant.

Sycamore tree leaves damaged by a condition known as ‘tar spot disease’ (Rhytisma Acerinum) - a plant pathogen which affects maple and sycamore trees in late summer and early autumn. It does not cause long-term damage to the health of the tree but does not look very pleasant. This specimen was seen in West Norfolk, England.
