The Arizona Meteor Crater (Barringer Meteorite Crater) formed 50,000 years ago when an asteroid plunged through the Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into what is now central Arizona. This area was not populated by humans at the time. Because of Arizona’s dry climate and the crater’s relatively young age, Meteor Crater is the best preserved impact crater on Earth. The small asteroid was just 150 feet across. Traveling at around 8 miles per second the force of the impact was tremendous. In just a few seconds the crater was formed when millions of tons of rock were thrown out. Today Meteor Crater is a famous tourist attraction with a museum featuring displays about the history of the crater. Scientist from all over the world come to Meteor Crater to study it. Meteor Crater is near Winslow, Arizona, USA.

Yellowstone National Park, Park County, Wyoming, United States. In the Mammoth Hot Spring area. On a travertine hill, many hot springs deposit each day tons of water containing calcium carbonate. Their energy comes from the magmatic system that feeds other Yellowstone geothermal areas.

Gobustan, Azerbaijan: mud spewing out from the earth due to compactional stress, Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes in the world, with around 300 of them, around a third of all mud volcanoes in the world, some thought to have medicinal qualities. Their occurrence in the area around Qobustan is closely linked to the oil and gas deposits there.

Dante's View of the Badwater area of Death Valley National Park in California. Taken from the Black Mountains and showing the Panamint Range on the far side.
The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.
During the late Jurassic Period about 150 million years ago, dinosaurs congregated along the shores of a vast freshwater lake in what is now southeastern Colorado. They left behind large trackways in the mud which shows up today eroded by river waters as over 1300 dinosaur footprints in limestone along the Purgatoire River. Most of these tracks are by made by herding Apatosaurus or sauropod dinosaurs. Part of the Picket Wire Canyonlands, the tracksite is the largest dinosaur tracksite in North America.
