The human settlements carved into the rock in the Murgia Materana Archeological Park near the town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as 'Sassi' (Matera's Stones). The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition quality.
