Old Muscat, Oman: Aljalali Fort or Eastern Fort, originally 'Forte de São João' (Fort St. John) is a harbor fort in Old Muscat, erected by the Portuguese Empire by order of King Philip I, between 1586 and 1588, to protect the port after Muscat had been sacked twice by Ottoman forces. In 1650, it fell to Omani forces. In the Omani civil wars between 1718 and 1747, it was captured twice by the Persians invited to support one of the rival imams. It then underwent extensive reconstruction. On several occasions, it served as a refuge or prison for members of the royal family. For much of the 20th century it was used as Oman's main prison.
