Pronghorn rut in fall in Yellowstone National Park
An autumn fog does not disguise the power of this splendid mature stag, roaring his defiance at opponents who are hidden, but can be heard, in the misty landscape. In the foreground is a female with a young fawn, with the female (hind) being the object of the stag's attention. This is the time of year when fawns become forcibly detached from their mothers. Stags grow one spike (tine) on their antlers for every year. A stag becomes mature (royal) when it has six tines on each antler. This fine fellow has eleven tines on each antler for a total of 22. He is a formidable foe for any would-be opponent.
