Rome, Italy, November 30 -- The Contarelli Chappel with the triptych of paintings on the life of Saint Matthew by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, inside the church of San Luigi dei Francesi (St. Louis of the French), in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. Built between 1518 and 1589 by the architects Giacomo Della Porta and Domenico Fontana, the church was consecrated on 8 October 1589. This Catholic temple is the national church in Rome of France, dedicated to the figure of King St. Louis IX. Caravaggio painted this triptych between 1599 and 1600, illustrating The Vocation of Saint Matthew (left), The Inspiration of Saint Matthew (center) and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew (right). Rome, Italy - May 12, 2018: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located in the Castro Pretorio district, near Termini Station and was built between 1879 and 1887 at the behest of Pope Pius IX who, in 1870, laid the foundation stone of the new building. However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. Siena, Tuscany, Italy, July 07 -- The stunning frescoed interior, with the apse and the main altar, of the church of the Santissima Annunziata, in the heart of the medieval city of Siena, in Tuscany, central Italy. Located in the square of the Cathedral of Siena, this church was built in 1257, while its interior was remade in Baroque style in 1730. In the background, behind the main altar, the apse is completely frescoed with a work by the Neapolitan artist Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764) depicting the Pool of Betzaeta, mentioned in the Gospel of John, with a stunning false perspective.
