This is an image belonging to what we can consider a chapter of twentieth-century Italian publishing: the “Albi di Novissima” and the “Quaderni di Novissima”, created by the Florentine entrepreneur Edoardo de Fonseca and his son Giorgio. In 1901, Edoardo founded the precious annual magazine “Novissima. Albo d'Arti e Lettere” which published texts and illustrations by many famous writers such as Pascoli, Giacosa, De Amicis, Martini, Capuana, Marradi, Di Giacomo, Rovetta, Fucini, Ricci, Biagi, Gargàno, Sodini, Rasi, and painters such as Giorgio Kienerk, Aleardo Terzi, Duilio Cambellotti, Plinio Nomellini, Metlicovitz or Hohenstein for example, while Giorgio, in the 1930s, created, in collaboration with the famous poet Giuseppe Ungaretti and the journalist Rafaele Contu, an important book series called “Quaderni di Novissima”. This collection contains numerous works by important Italian and foreign writers.
This is the Jack of Diamonds / gold coins (Oros) from a pack of Mexican Spanish playing cards dated 1846. It belongs to a baraja Espanola (Spanish deck of cards with a traditional design). The four suits are oros (gold coins), copas (cups or trophies), espadas (swords) and bastos (clubs or batons). The suit shown here is oros (gold coins, the equivalent of diamonds). A full deck consists of 40 cards because there are no 8s or 9s, and the first court card counts as number 10 (not 11). Packs of this kind, based on the Italian card system, have been around since the 15th century. The pack has a distinctive back design made up of a repeating pattern of crescents and horses' heads. Some of the cards include text in Arabic, but the manufacturer is unknown. Baraja (Spanish decks) are also used like tarot cards in fortune telling / cartomancy / divination.
