Rome, Italy, January 26 - The sumptuous monumental facade built in 1732 of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, dedicated to San Giovanni Evangelista and San Giovanni Battista. This Basilica, built on the Celian hill from the 4th century in the early Christian era, is also known as the Cathedral of Rome and is the most important and ancient basilica in the Western world. Inside the apse a series of magnificent Byzantine mosaics depicting the emperor Constantine, while the central nave was designed in the Baroque period by Francesco Borromini. The abbey of Montecassino is a Benedictine monastery located on the top of Montecassino, in Lazio.  Since December 2014, the site has been managed by the Lazio Museum Center.  It is the oldest monastery in Italy together with the monastery of Santa Scolastica.  It rises 516 meters above the sea level.
Known in English as St Minas on the Mountain, this superb example of Romanesque architecture was built between 1013-1018. St Miniato was an Armenian prince in the Roman army under Emperor Decius, who was accused of being a Christian after living like a hermit. Brought before the emperor at the Florentine gates, he survived an encounter with a panther in the amphitheater who, legend has it, refused to devour him. He was beheaded but then carried his head over the Arno, and ascended Mons Fiorentinus to his hermitage.
