The House of the Vestals in the First Century A.D.\nA tessera ( plural: tesserae, diminutive tessella ) is an individual tile, usually formed in the shape of a square, used in creating a mosaic.\n\nHead of Medusa Black and white mosaic emblema in opus vermiculatum made from polychrome tesserae. The head of Medusa is depicted in the central tondo which is inserted within a panel with squares in the corners. Two other rectangular fields contain a walled city with a palm tree and a tower in the lower part and a lighthouse with two ships in the upper part.
