In the public square known as the Niches is Guido Aretino (c991-c1033), a Benedictine monk described as a music theorist and pedagogue of high medieval music. He's also credited with inventing the modern staff notation, thus influencing western musical notation. It was sculpted by Lorenzo Nencini in the 19th century.
