This mosaic below the Assumption of the Virgin on the tympanum of the Porta della Mandorla (Almond Gate), depicts the Coronation of the Virgin, showing the Virgin Mary being crowned by Christ as a symbol of her exalted status in heaven. The gold halo signifies the sacred and divine nature of the figures depicted. The white dove above her represents the Holy Spirit. The mosaic lunette was created by Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio in the late 15th century.
