Cherry blossom is national flower of Japan and can be found everywhere during the cherry blossom season, whether in parks, gardens or just on the streets, which are very crowded by people doing hanami (cherry blossom viewing). \nThere are several hundred species of cherry blossoms in Japan with differences in colors, number of petals, timing of bloom, and size and shape of flowers. I uploaded here some of such species, including drooping cherry blossoms with strong pinkish color.

Prunus cerasifera is a species of plum known by the common names cherry plum and myrobalan plum. Plum blossom season starts in late January and lasts until March in Japan. In spite of severe cold climate, plum flowers are brave enough to start decorating bare branches of plum trees in our parks and gardens with red, pink and white blossoms, hinting to us that spring is around the corner, which is very encouraging to us Japanese who have endured cold winter with few flowers to please our eyes. They start blooming in cold weather, prior to the cherry blossom season.

This photo of Mt Fuji and cherry blossom was taken at Matsuda-yama, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo. Matsuda-yama is beautiful place with cherry blossoms and rape flowers in full bloom in early spring. The species of this cherry blossom is called kawazu-zakura, which blooms in February and early March.
