Rome, Italy, January 26 - A detail of the Gothic ciborium that surmounts the main altar inside the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist. This Basilica, built on the Celian hill since the 4th century in the early Christian era, is also known as the Cathedral of Rome and is the most important and ancient basilica in the Western world. Inside the apse a series of magnificent Byzantine mosaics depicting the Emperor Constantine, while the central nave was designed in the Baroque period by the architect Francesco Borromini. Rome, Italy, October 22 -- The Contarelli chapel inside the church of St. Louis of the French, with the triptych of Caravaggio's paintings on the life of St. Matthew. Built between 1518 and 1589 on plans by the architect Giacomo Della Porta, the church was consecrated on 8 October 1589.
