The Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) may be one of the most abundant ducks in the world. It frequents marshes, wooded swamps, grain fields, ponds, rivers, lakes and bays. The mallard may be found in any kind of aquatic habitat, but favors fresh water. Its diet is omnivorous. The mallard forages in water by dabbling, submerging head and neck, up-ending. On land it grazes, plucking seeds and grubbing for roots. This male mallard was standing on a rock in Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
