The Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) is a common bird in the forests of the western United States.  It is most numerous in dense coniferous woods of the mountains and the northwest coast, where its dark colors blend in well in the shadows. It normally lives in flocks except when nesting.  The Steller's Jay's diet is omnivorous consisting of about  two-thirds vegetable and one-third animal. Pine seeds, acorns, and other nuts and seeds, berries and wild fruits make up the vegetable part of the diet.  The meat part of the diet consists of insects, including beetles, wasps, and wild bees.
